September 3, 2018 at MAI was held a solemn opening of the second academic year of the Master’s double degree program of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Moscow Aviation Institute(MAI). President of SJTU Zhongqin Lin and Rector of MAI Mikhail Pogosyan took part in the opening ceremony.
“You will get better conditions for studying at MAI. I congratulate you on the beginning of the second academic year! Try to become the best experts in the aerospace field of the future and promote communication between our two countries!”, - said Zhongqin Lin in his greeting speech.
In 2017 it was decided to start a joint Master’s degree program between SJTU and MAI. The sponsors of the educational project became companies in China and Russia: the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) and the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC),the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), the United Engine Corporation (JSC UEC),. The aim of study is to form a personnel reserve for the Chinese-Russian project of a wide-body long-range aircraft CR 929.
Chinese and Russian students study together in English in three directions: “Design of aircraft structures from polymer composite materials”, “Technologies of life-cycle management for products in the design of modern aircraft”, “Propulsion Engineering”.
The duration of the program is 2.5 years. The first academic year students have already spent in China, at SJTU, the second educational year will be held at MAI.
During the year, students will be study at MAI on special subjects in each of the directions. At the end of the academic year they will have to present their master's degree thesis. Upon successful completion of the program each student will receive two diplomas: a diploma of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and a diploma of Moscow Aviation Institute.
“Today, the industry requires new specialists, and together with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, we launched an educational program that will train the leaders, who will change the future. Specialists of joint Chinese-Russian educational program will be in demand on a wide variety of international projects. Among Chinese and Russian colleagues from the industry there is a big request to attract graduates of the program to solve the practical problems of the aviation industry”, - said Rector of MAI Mikhail Pogosyan in his welcome speech.
The partnership of the two universities is developing at a steady pace. This year will be held the second intake for SJTU-MAI joint Master’s degree program, and first-year students will study in Shanghai. In 2019, in addition to the master's program, two partner universities plan to open a double degree bachelor's program. Moreover, MAI and SJTU signed an agreement on academic mobility of their students.
